UNBELIEVABLE moment Uber Eats E-Bike cyclist is escorted off M5 Motorway near West Bromwich by police
UNBELIEVABLE! This is the crazy moment an Uber Eats cyclist was spotted being escorted off the Southbound M5 Motorway near West Bromwich, England by police.
Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) followed the slow-moving pedal rider with blue and red flashing lights blaring away warning of danger ahead on the evening of Thursday 3 April at approximately 10pm.
The filmer, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I was driving home and spotted what looked like a stationary police car up ahead on the hard shoulder with flashing lights, only when I got closer I could see the vehicle was crawling along at what can’t have been more than 5mph.
“When I passed it, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, an Uber Eats rider, seemingly out of breath making slow progress along the motorway.
“I got off at Junction 1 near West Bromwich, parked up and grabbed my camcorder, as I got to the bridge, they were only just coming into view, you could barely see the rider in the darkness.
“Another cop car pulled up beside me but they didn’t say anything, they were just waiting for their colleagues to leave the carriageway, probably on hand if something terrible happened.”
The delivery cyclist looked to be worn out as he snaked his way along the emergency hard shoulder, before getting off and pushing his cycle up the off ramp.
Large articulated lorries and other vehicles passed the rider and officers at speed.
It is not known where the man joined the carriageway, but if he came on at the last junction, it would have been Junction 7 of the M6 (Great Barr on the outskirts of Birmingham), a total of 4 miles.
The cameraman continued: “When they came off the motorway, I saw he wasn’t wearing a helmet or any form of proper high visibility apart from his pedals and some small strips on his bag. He didn’t have any lights at all and his clothing was all dark, it's a miracle he was spotted, let alone uninjured”
The cyclist was wearing black and white trainers, blue jeans and a dark top, he was not wearing a helmet and had no front or rear lights.
The only things illuminating him were small reflective strips on the top of his delivery bag and 2 reflectors on his pedals. The police cars flashing lights made it possible to view the cyclist to other road users.
As the crazy rider came off the M5 motorway at Junction 1, it became clear the bicycle was an ‘Allegro’ E-Bike that had run out of power.
This comes just over 2 months after the same driver spotted a Just Eat rider on the M6 motorway near Birmingham’s Spaghetti Junction.
The rider, also on an electric bike, had joined the M6 Northbound carriageway from Junction 6 (Spaghetti Junction) on 26 January 2024.
‘recipe for disaster’
Speaking about both occasions, the driver said: “I can’t believe I have now witnessed two delivery cyclists on the motorway around Birmingham within a few months, how can they get it so wrong?
“Don’t these delivery companies check their riders have some form of knowledge about the laws of where cyclists can and cannot ride?
“I see their riders in Birmingham at night without lights all the time, but mix no lights and no knowledge of UK road laws, and you have a recipe for disaster.
“It can’t be long until a rider gets killed on the motorway following their delivery app.”
According to rule 253 of the Highway Code: “Motorways MUST NOT be used by cyclists.”
Rule 60 also states: "At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85)."
