Second batch of 27 Chinese nationals evacuated from violence-ravaged Haiti
This footage was filmed and produced 11 April 2024.
Storyline:
A total of 27 Chinese nationals were safely evacuated from Haiti to the neighboring Dominican Republic on Thursday as gang violence escalates in the Caribbean island country.
This is the second batch of Chinese evacuated from violence-ravaged Haiti. The first batch of 24 left there on March 22 with the help of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in the Dominican Republic.
The Chinese nationals arrived in the border city of Jimani of the Dominican Republic and were received by Chinese Ambassador to the country Chen Luning.
Wang Fuxing, one of the evacuees, was excited about this safe evacuation and the trip back home, saying he had not left his residence for nearly a month in Haiti.
A Filipino named Jose Lito was also evacuated along with the Chinese nationals. He expressed his appreciation for the helping hand from the Chinese side.
Boarding a coach, they all felt safe and relieved. They are grateful to so much support for their long way home.
Haiti has been rocked by a surge in gang violence since late February when armed groups raided police stations, prisons and airports.
According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 50,000 people fled the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince from March 8 to 27.
The United Nations said nearly half of the country's population, or 5.5 million people, needs humanitarian aid and 90 percent of the population faces extreme poverty.
