Conservationists physically push two ton rhino mum to stop her fatally falling on baby while drugged for dehorning
A group of conservationists had to stop a two ton rhino from fatally falling on her baby while they were drugged for dehorning.
Kim McLeod was following a group of rangers in Thula Thula Private Game Reserve, South Africa, as they tried to dehorn two of the animals.
Dramatic footage captured the moment the rhino mum Mona walked on wobbly legs towards her one-year-old daughter Lisa who was already asleep on the floor.
As Mona slowly started falling on Lisa, the rangers desperately pushed against her hulking weight to stop her crushing her baby eventually getting her to lie safely on the floor.
Kim said: “Mona was fighting the drugs to protect her baby and kept moving towards Lisa after she was darted.
“She was unstable and if we had not intercepted there was a good chance she would have gone down on top of Lisa which would have been fatal to her.
“Every time we dart the rhinos it is very intense as we do not always know what will happen and we often have to intervene to make sure they get down safely.
“Legs often have to be moved and we have to ensure that they do not roll onto their backs. If they roll their own organ can be squashed which could also be fatal.
“It is always difficult and we have all ground staff and the anti-poaching units on standby to help.
“With a cut horn the poachers are less likely to poach. They would rather poach a rhino with a full horn to get more money as they are sold according to weight.
“At Thula Thula all the rhinos are dehorned and trimmed every 12 to 14 months and there is a dedicated 24 hours a day anti-poaching Unit to protect the rhinos.”
