This is the dramatic moment an uprooted tree fell onto a car windscreen during a storm in Thailand.

Dashcam footage shows the huge tree toppling onto the SUV amid heavy rain in Nakhon Ratchasima province on April 19.

The impact cracked the vehicle's windscreen, while the driver Kanyapak Senpinit was uninjured. She pulled over and called the emergency services.

Kanyapak said: 'Heavy rain fell started falling and the wind caused the large tree to topple onto my car.

'I was lucky only the branches and not the trunk hit me. The car was severely damaged and will need repairs. I feel traumatised by this experience.'

Authorities cut off the thick branches to free Kanyapak's SUV, which was towed away from the scene.

The tree trunk obstructing the highway was also removed as deputy governor and MP Suttasitt Pottasak oversaw the operation.

Kanyapak said her insurance company could not cover the damages because it was a force majeure case and 'there was no other party involved'.

She is now seeking compensation from the Department of Highways which is responsible for the road on which the accident occurred.

Kanyapak's friend Jaturong Chaibang appealed for help on social media, saying: 'This whole incident caused my friend to suffer and I am very sad that no agency is taking responsibility for what happened.

'If this event caused damage, who is responsible? My friend just wants her car repaired and is not asking for more than that. She is still paying for the car installments. What will she use to go to work? She also has to care for a father who is sick and bedridden. Therefore, I would like everyone to help look at this and please help share it for the agencies to see.'

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are entering their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.

Chronic underinvestment in infrastructure - despite the government collecting astronomical taxes on car imports - has caused the country to have some the worst levels of road safety in world.
