This is the dramatic moment a freak storm tore off tin roofs in northern Thailand.

Footage shows the driving wind and rain slamming into the buildings in Phrae on Saturday, May 4. Debris was seen being strewn across the ground.

Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin said the powerful storms were due to the approaching monsoon rainy season, which sees violent downpours from May to November.

The torrential weather caused damage across Phrae and neighbouring Uttaradit province.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
