STORYLINE:

In a move towards a sustainable future, Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are contributing to Europe's green transformation, as revealed in a groundbreaking new report.

Titled "Greening Europe -- Report on the Development of Chinese NEV Manufacturers in Europe," the report highlights the synergy between China and the European Union (EU) in their shared quest for carbon neutrality.

The findings in the report align with the understanding among business insiders regarding China's EV industry and its cooperation with the EU.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): PAUL BURROWS, Secretary General of WAITRO (The World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations)
"I do feel that the Chinese EVs are a generation ahead of anything that I've seen coming out of Europe in terms of their extra functionality. It's one area of technology where China really has a strong lead."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): FERDINAND DUDENHOEFFER, Director of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Bochum, Germany
"The speed (of EV industry development) is incredible in China. The speed helps us to be better, to combat better the climate change. The green world is a world which we cannot do by ourselves in Germany, and in Europe, we are too weak. We need coupling, we need partnering. And China is very important in that process."

European consumers are increasingly drawn to Chinese EVs.

Sales of Chinese EVs in Europe surged by 23 percent in the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2023.

However, earlier this month, the European Commission announced provisional duties ranging from 17.4 percent to 38.1 percent, on EVs imported from China.

Experts believe such a move serves no one's interests, calling for concerted efforts towards a sustainable future.

SOUNDBITE 3 (German): HILDEGARD MUELLER, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry
"What is always important is competition on equal terms. What is important is that the markets are mutually open and that everyone has the same access. We accept the competition. This also means that we would welcome Chinese companies coming to Germany and producing here."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): VIOLETA BULC, Former EU Commissioner for Transport and vice-chair of the Europe-Asia Center
"As far as I know, the automotive industry of the EU and China have been well intertwined already. So we do not need more walls, but rather new models of collaboration.
So I feel that it is time for the world to wake up and make everything possible for working together, when we have this beautiful shared home, which we call Earth, and I feel that Europe and China can lead the way."
