Bakersfield, United States - August 18, 2024

08/18/2024 11:50 pm (GMT-0700) | BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –  The Bakersfield Police Department responded to reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision at the intersection of South Chester Avenue and Sandra Drive.

Arriving officers located an adult male pedestrian suffering from major injuries, according to the BPD. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel.

"The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was standing in the lanes of traffic outside of a crosswalk at the time of the collision," stated the BPD press release regarding the fatal incident. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Speed and impairment do not appear to be a factor in the collision, according to the BPD.

South and northbound traffic was blocked off for the investigation for an unknown duration.

The BPD noted in their press release that the 2800 block of South Chester Avenue is a north/south roadway with two lanes of travel in each direction with a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. There are no marked crosswalks or street lights in the area.

This is an ongoing investigation.
