China's desert dubbed 'sea of death' suffers major flooding
Part of the Taklamakan Desert in China's Xinjiang region has been affected by major flooding.
The area is known as the "sea of death" as its name derives from the Uyghur language.
Footage from August 24 shows roads in the area submerged by floodwater after rainfall in the upper reaches of the Tarim river increased by more than four times.
Users on Chinese social media commented: "I have never seen a flood in the desert."
Another said: "Is the desert going to become an oasis?"
"Where did this water come from?" one questioned.
According to the local meteorological department, sustained high temperatures have seen snow and glaciers surrounding the hinterland melt. As a result, the amount of water flowing from nearby tributaries of the Tarim river rapidly increased.
