On the evening of September 15, just before Typhoon Bebinca made landfall, the sky over Shanghai turned a pinkish-purple colour, attracting attention from local residents.

On September 16, meteorological bureau staff explained that this magical pink-purple sky is a normal phenomenon before the arrival of a typhoon.

The change in sky colour doesn't happen suddenly, but gradually over the one or two days leading up to the typhoon. The sky transitions from being particularly blue with bright white clouds to a pink-purple hue at landfall. This is due to changes in air currents and the reflection of light.

The phenomenon occurs because of the high moisture content in the air, which, combined with the light sources in the densely built-up city, leads to light scattering and refraction, creating this stunning visual effect.
