Motorcycle rider narrowly avoids falling under wheels of oncoming lorry
This is the heart-stopping moment a motorcycle rider narrowly avoided being crushed under an oncoming truck.
The male motorcyclist had reportedly driven the wrong way along Mittraphap Road in Khon Kaen province, Thailand, on October 26 afternoon.
CCTV footage shows how the two-wheeler, moving at high speed, veered toward the Hino lorry in front of a roadside chicken stall at around 2:39 pm. The smaller vehicle toppled and was crushed under the tyres, but the rider miraculously avoided being run over.
Officers from the Ban Phai district station and medics arrived and rushed the boy, believed to be a teenager, to a hospital for treatment. His wrecked Honda PCX motorcycle had skidded around seven feet from the highway.
The Hino lorry driver had parked some 600ft after a rear tyre burst from the accident.
Speaking to police, he claimed the teenager had crashed into a parked sedan near the food stall, sending the motorcycle careening toward his lane.
He said: 'I was driving normally and I noticed the motorcycle in the distance immediately because he was driving the wrong way. Suddenly, it collided with a sedan parked in front of the stall. It lost control and sped towards my truck. I couldn't dodge it in time.'
A police spokesman said: '‘We will summon the truck driver to the station for questioning and we will interview the youth motorcycle rider after his treatment to gather evidence for further legal procedures.'
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
