Authorities evacuate residents as Typhoon Toraji makes landfall in the Philippines
Authorities evacuated villagers as Typhoon Toraji made landfall in storm-battered Philippines on Monday.
Video shows disaster response officers telling residents to flee to a nearby school being used as a shelter in Buguey Town in Cagayan province on November 11.
The locals were among some 2,500 people forcibly evacuated from their homes in the country's northern region ravaged by four cyclones in less than a month. Schools and government offices were also closed in areas expected to be hit hardest by the typhoon.
Philippine weather agency PAGASA said Toraji, locally called Nika, touched down in Dilasag Town in northeastern Aurora province at 8:10 am local time with sustained winds of up to 81 miles per hour.
It was expected to move northwest across the mountainous main island of Luzon, weakening as it exits into the South China Sea.
Toraji comes on the heels of three other cyclones that killed at least 159 people in recent weeks.
The Philippines experiences frequent and intense storms especially during the typhoon season from June to November, due to its location in the Pacific typhoon belt. These storms often bring heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding that cause significant damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and communities.
