This is the heartwarming moment a liver donor meets the boy whose life she saved at the Cleveland Clinic during the summer.

Sandy Flash donated a portion of her liver to a one-year-old boy named Sonny, who was born with biliary atresia, a condition that required a liver transplant.

Sonny's mother, Katie White, was overwhelmed by the emotional encounter.

Katie said: 'Sandy gave a piece of herself to save my baby's life. Organ donation is truly an unconditional gift.'

Sandy, who had been inspired to donate after her husband's liver transplant, shared that meeting Sonny for the first time was deeply fulfilling.

She added: 'Next to having my own children, this is the most fulfilling thing I've ever done.'

The child's pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Deborah Goldman, noted that Sonny has made remarkable progress in his growth and development.

Dr Goldman added: 'Sonny is a remarkable child – he's caught up in his development and is a playful, energetic boy.'

Sandy hopes her story will inspire others to consider becoming living organ donors.

Biliary atresia is a rare liver condition in infants where the bile ducts are blocked or absent, preventing bile from flowing from the liver to the intestines. This causes bile to build up in the liver, leading to liver damage, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), pale stools, dark urine, and poor growth.

Every living donor undergoes medical and psychological evaluations to ensure they are fit for donation and understand the potential risks involved.
