The Sakurajima volcano erupted, sending an ash cloud 700 metres above the crater in Japan on November 18.

Officials said the explosive eruption occurred at 4:22 am and it is the 35th of the year. Authorities are monitoring the activity, though no evacuation orders have been issued.

Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.
