Google staff probed over GPS fail that saw family drive off unfinished bridge killing three
Google staff are being investigated over a Global Positioning System (GPS) failure that led a family to drive off an unfinished bridge, resulting in three deaths.
Local media reported that four engineers and a Google Maps official were being questioned following the deaths of three men who drove onto an under-construction bridge in Uttar Pradesh, India, while relying on directions from the Google Maps app.
Their white Suzuki vehicle plummeted into the Ramganga River from the motorway on November 24.
The victims - brothers Nitin and Ajit, both 30 and Amit, 40 - were on their way from Noida to Faridpur in Bareilly to attend a wedding when the incident occurred.
Local media reported the bridge allegedly lacked barriers or warning signs.
Budaun district magistrate Nidhi Srivastava said: 'Apart from corrective measures at the site, FIR under section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the BNS has been registered against two Assistant Engineers and two Junior Engineers of PWD and unknown persons.'
Google has expressed condolences and confirmed that the company fully cooperates with the ongoing investigation.
A spokesman said: 'Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. We're working closely with the authorities and providing our support to investigate the issue.'
Google Maps is a web mapping service by Google that provides navigation, traffic updates, and directions for driving, walking, cycling, and public transport. It also offers features like Street View, satellite imagery, and location search, allowing users to explore businesses, landmarks, and other points of interest.
