Distressed fishermen rescued from choppy seas amid Typhoon Co-may
This is the dramatic moment emergency crews rescued two distressed fishermen from rough seas in the Philippines.
Footage shows responders battling violent waves to reach the two anglers after their boat ran aground in the Tayamaan River in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.
Authorities deployed an unmanned rubber boat tied to a rope to bring the fishermen safely to shore at around 2 am on Thursday, July 24.
The rescued fishermen were later seen riding in an ambulance as they were taken for medical evaluation.
The Provincial Information Office said in a statement: 'Thanks to the combined efforts of various agencies, including the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), 2nd Occidental Mindoro Provincial Forcible Command (2nd OMPFC), Reserve Command (RESCOM), 76th Infantry Battalion (76IB), Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and the help of residents, a rescue operation was successfully carried out.
'The Provincial Government, under the leadership of PDRRMC (Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council) Chairman Governor Eduardo B. Gadiano, extends its sincere gratitude to all the agencies involved. Their unwavering dedication and courage in facing imminent danger just to save the two fishermen are truly commendable.'
The rescue took place amid severe weather conditions brought by Typhoon Co-may, locally known as Emong.
The storm made landfall over Agno, Pangasinan, at 10:40 pm on Thursday, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h and gusts reaching 165 km/h. It is expected to make a second landfall over La Union or Ilocos Sur on Friday.
Co-may is the strongest typhoon to impact the region in the past 16 years.
