Three people were killed when a car's Global Positioning System (GPS) led the driver off an unfinished bridge in India.

The white Suzuki vehicle plummeted into the Ramganga River from the motorway in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, on November 24.

Footage shows the four-wheeler with a flattened front being retrieved from the water.

Local reports said the GPS-guided vehicle crashed through a compromised section of the bridge.

The bridge had been weakened due to continuous rainfall and floods, which caused the front portion of the structure to collapse into the river.

Police officer Ashutosh Shivam said: 'The GPS failed to update the route changes, resulting in the incident.

'The absence of safety barriers or warning signs on the under-construction bridge exacerbated the danger, ultimately leading to the fatal accident.'

A post-mortem examination has reportedly been ordered for the bodies, and an investigation is underway.

Research suggests that GPS errors can originate from the satellites themselves, such as orbital errors, satellite clock errors, and selective availability.
