A wild elephant tried to visit a supermarket to look for a late-night snack.

Footage shows the jumbo named Plai Duan ambling near a shop entrance in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand on November 29.

It stood outside the store while panicked owner Sirimaniwan Leecharoenraksa held her phone behind the closed sliding glass door.

Plai Duan was unsuccessful in entering the shop but left massive damage outside, ransacking a smoothie stall and hardware shop within the premises.

It also toppled down 15 banana trees as it looked for more food in the compound.

Sirimaniwan said: 'The wild elephant was outside my property in the middle of the night.'

Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.

The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
