Gaza Strip: Gaza's war-ravaged health care system faces long road ahead for recovery
Gaza Strip - January 24, 2025 As the first phase of a hard-won ceasefire between Israel and Hamas enters its second week, Gaza's war-ravaged health care sector faces a daunting path to recovery, with a severe shortage of critical supplies and extensive damage to medical infrastructure. Throughout the war, Gaza's health care system was systematically targeted by Israeli attacks, with Israel claiming that Hamas used hospitals for protection. Medical facilities were destroyed, patients and health care workers were detained, and the delivery of essential medical supplies was severely restricted. Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization's representative for the occupied Palestinian Territories, has said that temporary clinics and hospitals in Gaza have been asked to expand their bed capacity to meet the growing medical needs. However, the rebuilding process is fraught with challenges. Although humanitarian aid has continued to flow into Gaza via the Rafah crossing since the ceasefire took effect, bringing vital food, medical supplies, and equipment, health officials in the Strip warn that the current supply is insufficient to meet the overwhelming demand. Medical facilities in Gaza have been stretched to their breaking point, leaving many patients waiting for treatment, while others are forced to seek care abroad due to a lack of specialized services. The situation is especially dire in northern Gaza, where significant damage to medical infrastructure has compounded the crisis. Kamal Adwan Hospital, located in the Jabalia refugee camp, was almost completely destroyed during the conflict. While the ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope, the recovery process for Gaza's health sector remains a long and challenging road. Shotlist: Gaza Strip - Jan 24, 2025: 1. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fathi Abu Qamar, Director General of Pharmacy in Gaza: "The amount of aid that has entered so far is very limited, with some from the World Health Organization and the [International Committee of the] Red Cross, but it is just the beginning. There are limited quantities that are not enough to cover the large deficit in medicines and medical supplies."; 4. Various of patients in hospital, man with wounded arm; 5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Emad Rady, Palestinian patient: "We hope that with the cessation of the war, we will be able to travel abroad for treatment, and that the necessary medicines will enter. As you know, there are not enough treatments available for us. My treatment is not available in Gaza, so I will have to travel abroad to be treated."; 6. Various of damaged hospital, interior of hospital, destroyed medical facilities; 7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Dr. Issa Sabah, physician, Kamal Adwan Hospital: "The hospital was completely forced out of service, and all departments were destroyed -- the oxygen station, the operations unit, and intensive care, in addition to the reception department that provided emergency services to patients in northern Gaza. Now that the people of northern Gaza have returned and there is no medical service, we need to rebuild the hospital again."; 8. Various of damaged buildings, rubble.
