French tourist, 70, rescued after crashing motorcycle down hillside in Indonesia
A French female tourist was rescued after crashing her motorcycle down a hillside in Indonesia.
Calvi, 70, veered off the road while trying to avoid a pothole in Tabanan Regency on holiday island Bali on January 26.
Her Honda Beat motorcycle hurtled off the road without guardrails and tumbled down a 13ft ravine.
Her husband Vautier, 75, who had been driving on another motorcycle behind her, called police for help.
Kompol I Nyoman Sukadana, police chief of Kediri City, said they received the report at 9 am.
He said: 'The victim allegedly avoided a pothole so that her motorcycle skidded and fell into a ravine as deep as four metres on the north side of the road.
'The evacuation lasted for a while because the rescuers had to use a stepladder and a stretcher to lift her from the ravine.
'The victim fell into the ravine with her motorcycle. Currently, she is safe and undergoing treatment. The accident was purely due to her losing control.'
Calvi suffered a fractured left hand and waist, and scrapes on her shoulders and face. She was undergoing intensive care at the Tabanan Regional General Hospital.
The couple were reported to have been staying in the seaside town of Sanur on the island.
Indonesia faces road safety challenges due to high traffic congestion, rapid urbanization, and the prevalent use of motorcycles, which make up a large portion of road fatalities. The country has one of the highest road traffic fatality rates in Southeast Asia.
The government has aimed to improve road safety through stricter regulations, educational campaigns, and infrastructure upgrades.
