Four residents were saved from their flooded home in northern Thailand after a landslide triggered by Tropical Storm Wipha hampered rescue efforts.

The villagers called disaster response personnel for help as the water level started rising around their home in the middle of a field in Phayao.

Anurak Prongsuya, chief of the Oil Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, led a rescue team to evacuate the locals amid heavy rain on Wednesday.

Footage shows officers battling strong currents as they waded across the knee-deep deluge to reach the terrified residents in the rural abode.

Authorities said a landslide cut off Highway No. 1188, causing severe damage to the road.

Highway Division officers have installed warning signs and traffic barricades at the area and informed the public to use other routes.

Damaged roads were being assessed and repairs were expected to start soon, they added.

Typhoon Wipha has been pounding Thailand with strong winds and torrential downpours.

The Thai Meteorological Department on Monday predicted more heavy rain and high seas until July 24. It added around half of Thailand will be battered with increased rainfall due to the typhoon, which made landfall in China's southern Guangdong province on July 20.

Sukanyanee Yawinchan, director-general of the Thai Meteorological Department, said Wipha has been downgraded to a tropical depression after hitting neighbouring Laos and was expected to further weaken into a low-pressure area.
