British tourist arrested over 'illegal motorcycle rental business' in Bali
A British tourist was arrested for allegedly running an illegal motorcycle rental business in Indonesia.
The suspect, identified only as KSM, had been hiring out two-wheelers to fellow tourists on Nusa Penida island for one and a half years.
Police arrested him at the Puri Penida Hostel in Bali on January 25, following complaints from local rental shop owners who said they felt 'disadvantaged' by his business operations.
Footage shows KSM and other immigration violators wearing orange inmate vests as they were presented to reporters in a press conference on Tuesday, February 4.
Ridha Sah Putra, head of the local immigration office, said: 'The person concerned misused his stay permit because he advertised and rented out two-wheeled motor vehicles. Every day there were three to four motorised vehicles that he could rent out for 150,000 IDR (7.35 GBP) a day to foreign nationals.
'The target customers were foreign nationals on vacation in Nusa Penida. From the results of the investigation, KSM only operates in Nusa Penida.'
KSM was said to have been married to an Indonesian woman but was living in Indonesia on a visitor visa valid until February 11.
The immigration head added: 'A visit permit is only given for the purpose of a visit, not for work or business.'
KSM was detained at Denpasar Immigration Detention Centre and will reportedly be deported to his home country 'in the near future'.
