Rioters in Bangladesh attacked the home of the country's founding leader, who is the father of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The unrest unfolded after Hasina, 77, currently in exile in India, called on her supporters in an online speech to rise against the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus on the evening of Wednesday, February 5.

Hasina denounced the new leadership, accusing them of seizing power through 'unconstitutional' means.

But the speech backfired when her opponents attacked Dhanmondi-32, her late father's home which is now a museum.

Furious protesters rammed the historic house of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in Dhaka, setting it alight and demolishing parts of it with shovels and hammers.

Footage shows a crowd of demonstrators gathered outside the house, which had been converted into a museum, as it burned.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is widely regarded as a hero of independence, but his legacy has been tainted by anger towards his daughter.

She was removed from power in 2024 after a deadly student-led uprising. She has faced accusations of electoral fraud, jailing her critics, and widespread corruption claims during her administration.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the recent attack.
