A magnitude 4.0 earthquake rattled homes as it hit Delhi, India.

Footage shows ceiling lights swaying as the tremor rocked the capital at 5:36 this morning, Monday, February 17.

The National Center for Seismology said the quake struck at a depth of five kilometres and was centred in New Delhi.

In a statement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged locals to be calm.

He said: 'Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.'
