Odisha: The Rushikulya River mouth in Odisha,India has set a new world record for mass nesting of olive ridley sea turtles.
Over the course of just eight days, an astounding 6,98,718 turtles laid their eggs, surpassing all previous records. This remarkable event outshines the 5.5 lakh turtles that nested in 2022 and the 6.37 lakh in 2023.
The eggs, which will remain in the sand for approximately 45 days, are under strict protection. Authorities have implemented extensive security measures to safeguard the nests. The beach has been divided into 50 segments, with dedicated forest personnel stationed at each segment to ensure the eggs’ safety.
The Brahmapur Divisional Forest Officer has issued clear instructions to staff to take all necessary precautions to protect the turtle eggs during this critical period.
This extraordinary occurrence highlights the ecological significance of the region and the ongoing efforts to preserve olive ridley turtles, a species crucial to marine biodiversity.
