This is the moment a Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) jet lands on a public road for the first time.

Authorities tested the take-off and landing of a Gripen fighter aircraft on Highway No. 4287 in Songkhla Province on Thursday, February 27, around 10 am, during a practice drill as part of their deployment strategy.

The training involved two flights with the first being a short-distance landing for refuelling and weapon installation and the second taking off for the mission.

Dramatic footage shows locals waiting on both sides of the road, braving the rain to watch the aircraft.

The training demonstrated that the jets could land within a short distance of approximately 0.4-0.5 miles (700-800 metres) if an airport were unavailable.

Air Chief Marshal Punpakdee Pattanakul, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Air Force, witnessed the training alongside Songkhla Governor Chotinarin Kerdsom.

Punpakdee said the exercise aimed to improve efficiency and showcase the aircraft's potential in emergencies.

The Royal Thai Air Force chose Road 4287 from seven alternatives for this operation, making it the first time a road has been used as a base for combat aircraft.

Gripen jets are the main combat aircraft of the Thai military, with their primary base at Wing 7 in Surat Thani province.
