This is the terrifying moment a summer storm caused carnage as it whipped through market stalls in Thailand.

Dramatic footage shows the tropical downpour and strong winds in Mae Lao, Pak Ko Dam, Chiang Rai, on March 18.

The freak weather grew intense, collapsing an awning, with trees in the area snapping and falling to the ground, and overhead power lines short-circuiting, sparking with electricity.

Various items were thrown in front of shops as the heavy downpour persisted.

The Meteorological Department forecasts summer storms, including thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and lightning, across most regions of the country at the start of this week, followed by lower temperatures.

Thailand has a tropical monsoon climate with a hot, rainy season from May to October, driven by the southwest monsoon winds. Thunderstorms are common during the summer rainy season, sometimes with heavy downpours, gusty winds, and lightning. Major cities like Bangkok can experience urban flooding from the intense rainfall.
