US, Phoenix: Phoenix Department of Public Safety Pursuit Ends in Brief Standoff
Phoenix, United States - April 15, 2025 04/15/2025 02:20 am (GMT-0700) PHOENIX, Ariz. – Per the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) captain at the scene: An AZDPS trooper attempted to stop a Jeep SUV near 27th Avenue and Missouri Avenue around 2:20 AM. The Police Police helicopter was overhead at the time of the stop. The trooper activated his lights but the driver refused to yield. The suspect fled east on Missouri Avenue and a pursuit was initiated. Ground units disengaged and fell back to a safe distance while the helicopter tracked the suspect from above. The suspect switched off his headlight and taillights and entered the southbound Black Canyon Access Road from Missouri Avenue. The suspect then entered the southbound I-17 mainline at Camelback Road, maintaining a high rate of speed. A short time later the suspect entered the westbound I-10 from the 17. The suspect the exited the I-10 at 35th Avenue and fled south. The suspect then entered a residential neighborhood off of 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street traveling westbound on Roosevelt. Moments later, the suspect entered a driveway to a residence near 3800 west Roosevelt Street. Troopers and Phoenix Police quickly converged on the SUV and a high-risk traffic stop was initiated. Troopers and officers issued several commands to the suspect. The suspect refused to comply with commands and remained seated in the driver seat. The driver continued to ignore several lawful commands over the course of several minutes. The driver eventually exited the SUV but continued to ignore commands from troopers. In response to the non-compliant behavior, a Phoenix Police Tactical Support Bureau officer deployed multiple less-lethal 40 millimeter projectiles at the suspect. The suspect complied with commands after being struck by the less-lethal munitions. The suspect, now identified as an 18-year-old male, was then taken into custody without further incident. Phoenix Fire responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital for precautionary evaluation due to minor injuries sustained from the less-lethal munitions. Once medically cleared, the suspect will be released into DPS custody where he will be booked on charges related to the felony flight.
