This is the heroic moment firefighters rescued a pet dog trapped in a storm drain in North Carolina.

Dramatic footage shows an emergency responder being lowered underground to assist the pooch, who was stranded around 15ft (4.5m) below the surface.

The Raleigh Fire Department's Engine 26 crew responded to the call on Laurel Glen Drive in the early afternoon of Saturday, April 19.

The team requested additional technical support, and more firefighters, along with Raleigh Animal Control personnel, quickly arrived on the scene.

Officials confirmed that the canine was unharmed and safely returned to its owner.

The firemen said: 'A very happy ending to this situation for all involved'.
