A Buddhist temple in Thailand has converted old concrete water jars into 'monk caves'.

Religious leaders at the Wat Saensuk shrine repurposed the massive containers into solo meditation retreats for devotees wishing to pray in solitude.

The prayer pods, which come in vibrant colours, are equipped with rugs, mosquito netting, small tables, and religious decorations to ensure a cosy stay.

Caretaker Sumet Sumetho said the water storage pots had been donated to the temple but were left unused after a direct water supply was installed in the building in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

He said: 'Many devotees come to the temple to practice their faith, but we found that there is often not enough space for everyone. So I thought of using the jars as a makeshift meditation centre. I searched online and applied the ideas I saw.

'I saw that one concrete jar had just enough space for one person, and it was also cool and had resonant acoustics conducive to meditation.'

Sumet said that villagers have started donating more giant concrete jars to the temple to be converted into mini meditation rooms.
