Kanlaon Volcano spewed molten material during an explosive eruption in the Philippines.

Footage shows bright orange currents of ash and debris glowing at the peak of the volcano, which erupted at 3 am local time on May 13.

Terrified residents in Negros Occidental said they woke up from the volcano's rumbling.

State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said 180 volcanic earthquakes were detected as 'pyroclastic density currents' - fast-moving mixtures of gas and volcanic debris - flowed down the slope during the five-minute eruption.

The agency said: 'Large ballistic fragments were also observed to have been thrown around the crater within a few hundred meters and caused burning of vegetation near the volcano summit.'

A 14,800ft (4,500m) ash plume was also recorded.

Kanlaon, which straddles Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental provinces on Negros Island, is one of the 24 active volcanoes in the country.

It is currently under Alert Level 3, indicating 'increased chances for sudden and even stronger explosive eruptions'. The volcano's last explosive eruption was on December 9.

The Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
