TACOMA, Wash. — The meerkat family at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium just got a whole lot bigger—and cuter.

Moms Keeya and Naledi each recently welcomed four meerkat pups, and the eight new arrivals are already delighting visitors with their playful energy. Naledi’s pups—named Mattock, Auger, Axe, and Tiller—recently made their debut in the zoo’s Kids’ Zone habitat.

The names are a nod to the pups’ natural digging instincts. “These adorable kits were basically born with shovels for hands,” the zoo shared on social media.

Keepers say the pups are growing more confident each day, mimicking their parents as they learn to dig, scurry, and strike curious poses.

Guests can catch the action at the zoo’s Kids’ Zone, though they may have a tough time getting these little ones to sit still.
