A fire at a hospital in Bristol forced patients to be evacuated as smoke billowed into the sky.

The blaze broke out shortly before 4:30 pm on May 22 at St Michael's Hospital.

Dramatic footage shows a huge plume of smoke rising from the roof of the maternity hospital on Southwell Street.

Crews from Avon Fire and Rescue Service brought the flames under control.

Pregnant women and newborns were evacuated from the building, with midwives providing support outside.

Some patients were relocated to the Bristol University Life Sciences building for safety.

Professor Stuart Walker, the hospital's managing director, praised staff for their efforts in evacuating patients. He confirmed that the hospital, including the delivery suite, has since reopened.

Avon and Somerset Police said St Michael's Hill remains closed and advised the public to avoid the area.

The fire was extinguished by around 5:30 pm.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
