A Burmese army base was recaptured by resistance forces, sparking an exodus of refugees toward the Thai border.

Footage shows blasts erupting at the junta encampment as the Karen National Liberation Army and Karen National Defence Organisation coverged on the base in Myawaddy in southeastern Myanmar.

The military camp - coveted for its strategic location overseeing the forests around the mountainous region - was successfully captured by guerrilla troops on May 30.

However, the clashes have forced some 533 villagers in nearby homes to evacuate to Tak in northern Thailand, some 2 miles away.

Officials said soldiers and border patrol police were deployed to tighten security and give humanitarian aid to the refugees, who were staying in four temporary shelters in the province.

Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a military coup in 2021.

Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.

Aung San Suu Kyi has since been jailed for 33 years on politically motivated charges and is likely to die behind bars unless the army is toppled - a tragic end the politician hailed by Barack Obama as an 'inspirational icon of democracy'.
