A driver accidentally rammed her car into a wedding reception when she pressed the wrong gear.

Sumaporn Tantiwikrom, 41, mistakenly put her car into drive instead of reverse before hurtling through the front wall of the reception venue in Krabi, southern Thailand, on Monday.

The vehicle hurtled into the banquet hall, ploughing through tables and chairs draped in pink before coming to a stop near a platform.

Police rushed to The Platinum Hall at around 2 pm local time to find the entrance partially torn down from the crash. Inside, the floor was strewn with shattered glasses, bowls, and food.

No injuries were reported as all of the guests had already left. A visibly shaken Sumaporn remained for questioning.

She said: 'The incident happened just after the party ended. Everyone had already left, and I got into my car to head home. I put the car in gear and intended to back out of the parking lot. I wasn't sure whether to shift the gears into reverse or forward.

'When I pressed the accelerator, the car suddenly shot forward. I was so startled I didn't know what to do, and the next thing I knew, the car had already crashed into the wedding venue.'

Jongsak Wangwittayawiwat, 61, the bride's grandfather, said they heard a 'loud noise like firecrackers' shortly before the crash.

He added: 'I thought fireworks were being set off, then I saw the sedan ploughing through chairs and tables. Fortunately, there were no people there. If it happened during the party, many people would have been injured.'

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and road education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

The country has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
