I was in my ninth month of pregnancy until I gave birth. My baby weighed 2 kilos at birth, and afterward, his health deteriorated because Breastfeeding failed because I had nothing to eat myself.” 13. WHITE FLASH 14. (SOUNDBITE) PALESTINIAN MOTHER HAWLA MUHAMMAD SULEIMAN ABU ZUAITER, SAYING: “As you can see, his condition—he is ten months old but looks like he’s only ten months old (repeated for emphasis), and he weighs only four kilos and four hundred grams. He doesn’t suffer from any illness; it’s just severe malnutrition. I’ve done all the necessary tests for him—I did a CBC, chemistry tests, a brain scan, and everything that could explain the cause of his malnutrition. But he simply suffers from severe malnutrition with no underlying medical conditions.” 15. WHITE FLASH 16. (SOUNDBITE) PALESTINIAN MOTHER HAWLA MUHAMMAD SULEIMAN ABU ZUAITER, SAYING: “We live in a tent, and sometimes there isn’t even milk to give him. The situation was dire—not just for my son, but for all of Gaza, for all the children in Gaza. Sometimes, I would give him soup from the charity kitchen when it was available—lentil soup, sometimes milk. There was a period when the special formula milk ran out, so I had to give him regular milk. Many things were scarce—resources and possibilities were limited. Whatever was available, I would give him.” 17. WHITE FLASH 18. (SOUNDBITE) PALESTINIAN MOTHER HAWLA MUHAMMAD SULEIMAN ABU ZUAITER, SAYING: “I even gave him peanut butter as a substitute, which is actually meant for patients, along with milk and syrup. I demand everything—not just for my son, but for all the children of Gaza. The children of Gaza are deprived; more than half suffer from malnutrition—no, not just half, more than half! I demand the opening of the crossings. I demand lower prices for the things our children need. For example, a pack of Pampers costs 150 shekels—why is it so expensive?" 19. WHITE FLASH 20. ZAKARIA LYING ON GROUND (2 SHOTS) GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JUNE 1: A deepening humanitarian catastrophe grips Gaza as Israel's prolonged blockade of border crossings pushes 2.4 million Palestinians, including thousands of malnourished children, toward famine. Among them is 11-month-old Zakaria Al-Majdoub, who weighs just 4.4 kilograms—less than half the typical weight for his age—due to severe acute malnutrition. In a May 28 statement marking 600 days of war, Gaza’s Health Ministry reported at least 60 child deaths from malnutrition since October 2023. The government media office warns that 65,000 children now face life-threatening hunger, with surviving infants suffering intestinal infections, muscle atrophy, and stunted growth. Maternal malnutrition has also triggered a surge in birth defects. Zakaria’s mother, Hawla Muhammad Suleiman Abu Zuaiter, recounted her family’s ordeal after multiple displacements forced her to give birth in Khan Younis during their march from Rafah. "The situation was harsh—no food, no resources," she said. "My baby was born at just 2 kilograms. Breastfeeding failed because I had nothing to eat myself." Now living in a tent in northern Gaza’s Al-Shati Refugee Camp, Hawla struggles to find even basic nourishment for her son. "I would give him soup from the charity kitchen when it was available—lentil soup, sometimes milk. There was a period when the special formula milk ran out, so I had to give him regular milk," she told Anadolu. Medical tests ruled out underlying illnesses, confirming Zakariya’s condition stems solely from starvation. The blockade has crippled Gaza’s food and medical supply chains, inflating prices of essentials like infant formula and diapers—now costing 150 shekels ($40) per pack. Hawla described resorting to peanut butter and syrup as makeshift nutrition. " The children of Gaza are deprived; more than half suffer from malnutrition—no, not just half, more than half," she emphasized, demanding immediate border openings and price controls. Israel continues to block the entry of more than 3,000 health aid trucks into Gaza, worsening an already catastrophic humanitarian situation, a senior health official said last Sunday. Since March 2, Israel has kept all border crossings shut, cutting off the entry of food, medicine, fuel, and other essential supplies. Israel’s blockade of Gaza has created a man-made famine, according to the UN. With border crossings effectively closed to humanitarian aid for over 90 days, Gaza’s 2.4 million residents have been plunged into hunger. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing over 54,400 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's population. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
