A power bank caught fire and exploded at an airport in the Philippines.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) reported that the incident took place on Tuesday morning, June 24, at the Initial Security Screening Checkpoint (ISSCP) of Roxas Airport in Capiz.

During routine screening, airport staff discovered a 72,000 milliampere-hour (mAh) power bank inside the luggage of a passenger travelling to Manila.

Authorities noted that the portable battery exceeded the 160-watt-hour limit allowed for power banks on board aircraft.

The female passenger initially claimed that the charging gadget had been permitted on her inbound flight from Manila. However, she later agreed to hand the device over to her companion outside the terminal.

CAAP said: 'While arrangements were being made, the power bank suddenly sparked and ignited on the inspection table.'

'An airport security guard immediately responded and discharged a fire extinguisher to suppress the flames. Despite the intervention, the power bank exploded shortly thereafter.'

Footage captures the device sparking as emergency responders stand nearby.

No significant damage was reported following the incident.
