Beautiful moment hundreds of turtles are released into the sea
This is the beautiful moment hundreds of turtles were released into the sea.
Abdul Rohim and his colleague set free dozens of green turtle hatchlings at Sukamade Beach in Banyuwangi, Indonesia.
Footage shows the conservationist carefully pulling up a white sack to free the tiny marine animals in Meru Betiri National Park on June 27.
The sea turtles totter across the sand towards the water, bumping into the foamy surf at the shoreline.
Abdul said: 'We collect turtle eggs every day and hatch them in a natural hatchery.'
An adult female green turtle can lay up to 150 eggs per nest, often nesting multiple times in a season, but fewer than one in 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood.
Meru Betiri National Park, one of Indonesia's most vital turtle nesting sites, protects around 3,000 nests each year.
Indonesia is home to six out of seven of the world's sea turtle species, including the green turtle, which is classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List.
These turtles are vital for healthy marine ecosystems, as they help maintain seagrass beds and coral reefs.
Conservation groups, local communities, and government agencies work together to protect nesting beaches, relocate eggs to safe hatcheries, raise and release hatchlings, educate the public, and promote fishing practices that reduce bycatch.
However, despite protective regulations, the country's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries reports that tens of thousands of turtle eggs are still illegally harvested every year.
