Elderly woman breaks through roof tiles and climbs to safety out of flooded home in China
On June 24, Rongjiang County in Guizhou was hit by a catastrophic flood classified as a “once-in-50-years” event. The peak flow of the Duliu River reached 11,360 cubic metres per second, exceeding the warning level by 5.21 metres.
Large areas of the county’s low-lying regions were submerged, with transportation disrupted and communications cut off in some towns. Many residents were in urgent need of assistance.
A 72-year-old elderly woman, living alone, became trapped in her home by rising floodwaters, facing an extremely dangerous situation. As the water engulfed her house, she quickly broke through the roof tiles of her home and climbed onto her roof.
After neighbours noticed she was trapped, they immediately took action, calling emergency services while also guiding the woman in self-rescue. With remarkable determination, she managed to clamber up to the rooftop and move to a relatively safe spot.
Clutched in her hand was a black plastic bag containing an umbrella, dry clothes, and a towel. She used the towel to dry herself, changed into dry clothes, and opened the umbrella to shield herself from the heavy rain—helping maintain her body temperature and prevent hypothermia while awaiting rescue.
After receiving the emergency call, the rescue team rushed to the scene and safely evacuated the elderly woman. Her neighbours were relieved and grateful to see her rescued.
