Just before 4:00 AM, a volcanic eruption began in southeast Iceland, near the area affected by the August eruption.

The eruption originates from a fissure measuring between 700 and 1000 metres in length. Reports confirm the fissure does not appear to be expanding.

Footage taken earlier this morning shows a visible crack in the ground, estimated to be about 2 kilometres long.

This new eruption is occurring close to the site of the crater that was most active during last summer’s volcanic activity.
