A Thai woman was arrested for allegedly running an illegal commercial surrogacy scheme for foreign couples.

The suspect, Urairisa, reportedly lured women Thai women into becoming surrogates for overseas customers.

She was arrested at the departure terminal of Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, moments before boarding a flight to Hong Kong on Wednesday.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and Immigration Bureau intercepted her after the Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant on July 9.

The DSI said Urairisa was wanted for organising commercial surrogacy, acting as a middleman to facilitate surrogacy, and participating in the activities of a transnational criminal organisation.

She faces two charges under the 'Protection of a Child Born by Medically Assisted Reproductive Technology Act'.

Authorities said she was handed over to the inquiry officer of DSI's Bureau of Foreign Affairs and Transnational Crime for further legal action. Police are expanding the investigation to find other suspects involved in the network.

Under Thai law, arranging commercial surrogacy is punishable with up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 200,000 baht.
