A female Thai driver narrowly escaped injury when her car burst into flames shortly after being repaired.

Sasita Butwattakee, 62, pulled over when her car failed to pick up speed while driving along a road in Chonburi on Thursday.

She parked the vehicle on the roadside but was shocked to see fire and smoke coming from the engine compartment.

Dashcam footage shows a panicked Sasita exiting the Ford sedan as passersby tried to put out the growing fire with extinguishers.

Firefighters later arrived on Sukprayun Road and extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes. However, the fire had ripped through the engine compartment and spread into the cabin.

Sasita said the incident occurred after she had just collected the vehicle from a garage where the starter and fuel line had been replaced.

She said: 'I was driving home but I found the gas pedal wasn't working so I pulled over. As soon as I got out, I saw smoke coming from the engine before it suddenly caught fire. I was lucky I was able to leave in time.'

Authorities said they were investigating the exact cause.
