Floods in northeastern Thailand force village evacuations
Floods in northeastern Thailand forced residents to evacuate their homes as heavy rainfall triggered sudden surges of water.
The floodwaters struck hundreds of properties in Khon Kaen on August 31, reaching depths of approximately 16 inches after water rushed down from nearby mountains.
Footage shows residents and emergency workers using basins to scoop floodwater out of homes, while sandbags were placed at doorways to prevent further damage.
Soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, along with defence and local volunteers, were deployed to help villagers move their belongings to higher ground.
Authorities reported that the region experienced continuous heavy rain from Friday until Saturday night, which led to the sudden flooding.
The Thai Meteorological Department on Sunday said that Tropical Storm Nongfah had weakened into a strong low-pressure system moving into northern Thailand.
Combined with an intensifying southwest monsoon, the weather system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across 43 provinces over the next one to two days.
Authorities warned residents to constantly monitor weather updates.
