Storyline: UN-backed humanitarian organizations are facing significant challenges in maintaining their operations in the Gaza Strip as Israel continues its military strikes in and aid blockade to the area. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, has been delivering health care and basic services to Palestinian refugees for over six decades. However, in Gaza today, where over two million people are enduring extreme poverty, the ongoing conflict has severely undermined the UN agency's ability to provide aid -- not due to a lack of supplies, but the Israel-imposed restrictions block their distribution efforts. As families in Gaza are struggling to survive, UN humanitarian efforts have become the last lifeline for Palestinians. "The challenges of providing aid in the Gaza Strip are enormous. We are trying to meet the needs of more than two million people in one of the most difficult and dangerous operating environments in the world. And unfortunately, after all of this time, we're still trying to meet people's basic needs," said Tess Ingram, spokeswoman of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Only four of UNRWA's 22 health centers now remain functional, with some operating inside shelters and others set up outdoors as Israeli bombardment persists across Gaza. For many families, these limited services are their only chance for medical treatment and survival. "Our situation is miserable. We can't afford our medicines anymore, so we only use simple painkillers. For forty years, my family and I have depended on UNRWA for treatment. Without them, we have nothing," said Tamam Al-Arouqi, a displaced Palestinian. "I came here because my child is suffering from malnutrition. In the past, I used to get baby formula once every week or two. Now there's no milk, and I come every day hoping to get some for my baby," said Nada Abu Ormana, another displaced Palestinian. Although aid workers face grave risks, they still remain committed to their humanitarian mission. "Under international humanitarian law, aid workers must be protected. This is the rules of war and yet we have seen time and again in this conflict that aid workers have been killed. More than 500 aid workers have been killed in this conflict. It is imperative that civilians are protected. This includes children, it includes aid workers, it includes journalists," said Ingram. Shotlist: Gaza Strip - Recent: 1.
