Climate zealots target Turin Auto Show with 'Red Rebels' performance
Climate activists targeted the Turin Auto Show with a silent performance criticising environmental policies and the war in Gaza.
Dressed in red as they walked quietly through the Piazza Castello, the 'Red Rebels' from the group Extinction Rebellion protested against 'unsustainable mobility' and car companies profiting from the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Footage shows the demonstrators marching with Palestinian flags on September 26 as they held signs that read: 'Palestine: Hyundai complicit in war crimes'.
An Extinction Rebellion spokesman said: 'In Turin, a city where traffic-related air pollution causes hundreds of deaths every year and where thousands of automotive workers face layoffs and redundancy payments, an event is being inaugurated that celebrates a mobility model that stands in stark contrast to the need for a transition to a more just and sustainable society.
'The Auto Show once again celebrates a model of development based on environmental, social, and human destruction. The world we want is colourful and joyful, where cities are places to live, share, and care for, not showcases for tourists or profit for a few.'
Turin is one of Europe's most polluted cities, where traffic-related air pollution causes up many premature deaths annually, while public transport funding has been cut in favour of large infrastructure and military spending.
Extinction Rebellion is a global protest movement using nonviolent civil disobedience to demand urgent government action on climate change and biodiversity loss. The group is known for its disruptive rallies like roadblocks and mass sit-ins.
