(SOUNDBITE) (Dutch) ACTIVIST MARIA SAYING: "I’ve been cycling through all of the provincial capitals of the Netherlands from September 1st to October 1st. Once I’ve completed that, I’ll be done. On October 1st, I returned home. And I hope I’ve managed to encourage many people to think differently about the situation. Because I believe the situation is extremely unjust. Israel has occupied Palestine since, let’s say, 1948. But, well, the thing is, they just keep taking more and more and more. And I think their goal is to eventually drive the Palestinians out of all parts of Palestine. And I just disagree with that. This is neocolonialism. It simply cannot happen. It must not happen. Well, I’m turning 75 this year. I was going to throw a party. But I just couldn’t get excited about the idea of celebrating while, on the other side of the world, genocide is happening. So, I was tossing and turning at night, and then I thought, well, I’m not going to throw that party. I’m going to do something that I can do. And I thought, well, I can cycle through the Netherlands, with the main goal of raising awareness about the situation. Because I notice that a lot of people, even some of my friends… for example, don’t even know the word ‘nakba.’ So, we are just not well-informed. That’s one of the worst things, I think. As I said, we never learned about this in school. And it’s still not considered genocide by our government. And I get angrier and angrier and want to do something about it. It doesn’t help to be angry and sad if you don’t turn it into something positive. Yeah, and what’s beautiful is that I’ve raised so much money with this. In almost every city I arrived in, I met people. There were a few smaller places where no one was there. But I still stood for half an hour. Then I’d walk off the terrace with my story and my business card. The pro-Palestinian movement would say, ‘Do you have a bed? You can stay at my place.’ So tonight, I’m going to sleep at someone’s house that I don’t even know. Twice, hotels were even paid for me. Well, I’ve cycled about 350 kilometers, and I’ve probably raised around 1500 kilometers of food. We need to show it. Something has to be done. This cannot continue like this."UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS - OCTOBER 2: A 74-year-old Dutch woman named Maria cycled across the Netherlands for a month to protest Israel's attacks on Palestine and Gaza, raising thousands of euros in donations and aiming to change public opinion. Maria embarked on her journey from her hometown of Leiden on Sept. 1, pedaling through all the country's provincial capitals and various other cities, and covered a total of approximately 1,500 kilometers before concluding her trip on Oct. 1. Speaking to Anadolu, Maria explained her motivation, stating she could not bring herself to celebrate her upcoming 75th birthday while "on the other side of the world, genocide is happening." "Instead of throwing a party, I decided to do something that I can do," she said. "I thought, well, I can cycle through the Netherlands, with the main goal of raising awareness about the situation." Maria cycled daily between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., covering an average of 50 kilometers. Her journey was supported by local residents who opened their homes for her to stay in, with some even arranging hotel accommodations. Upon arriving in city squares each evening, she was often greeted by supporters. There, she would speak to passersby, informing them about the situation in Palestine and Gaza, which she described as "extremely unjust" and "neocolonialism." "I believe the situation is extremely unjust. Israel has occupied Palestine since, let's say, 1948," Maria told Anadolu. "They just keep taking more and more and more. And I think their goal is to eventually drive the Palestinians out." A key aim of her activism, she said, was to combat a lack of public awareness. "I notice that a lot of people... don't even know the word 'nakba'. So, we are just not well-informed. That’s one of the worst things, I think." Throughout her journey, Maria managed to collect €22,000 ($23,500) in donations for Gaza. Reflecting on the public response, she said: "What’s beautiful is that I’ve raised so much money with this... The pro-Palestinian movement would say, 'Do you have a bed? You can stay at my place." Maria expressed hope that her efforts encouraged people to think differently. "It doesn’t help to be angry and sad if you don’t turn it into something positive... We need to show it. Something has to be done. This cannot continue like this."
