Indonesia landslide death toll rises as rescue teams search for survivors
Rescue teams in Indonesia searched for survivors as the death toll from a landslide continued to rise.
Torrential rains sent mud crashing onto homes in three villages in Central Java on Thursday evening, November 13.
Footage captured by resident Maz Dikha shows emergency responders combing the site for survivors in Cibeunying village.
By the third day of search operations on Saturday, the joint search and rescue team had recovered eight victims, in addition to three found earlier.
Muhammad Abdullah, head of the Cilacap SAR Office, said ten people were still missing.
Heavy equipment was deployed to aid rescue efforts, but officials said unfavourable weather was hampering operations.
On Sunday, another landslide struck Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java, killing one person. The victim was reportedly found one kilometre from the disaster site.
Muhammed Chomsul, head of the Central Java BPBD Emergency Division, said: 'Rain lasted for more than 13 hours. The landslide stretched around 100 metres and covered nearly one hectare in Situkung Hamlet, RT 1–4.
'Twenty houses were affected, and we do not yet know the exact level of damage - whether major, minor, or moderate.'
Local media reported that 180 families, totalling around 700 people, were affected, while two victims remained missing.
