China: China's transport sector maintains steady growth in first 10 months
Storyline: China's transport sector reported steady growth in the first 10 months of this year, with increases in freight volume, passenger traffic, port throughput and infrastructure investment, data from the Ministry of Transport showed on Friday. The country's freight volume posted steady growth in the first 10 month, with business freight volume rising 3.5 percent year on year to 48.29 billion tons. Cross-regional passenger movement continued to rise in the same period, reaching 56.88 billion trips, up 3.6 percent year on year. Port activity expanded as well, with cargo throughput climbing 4.3 percent to 15.13 billion tons and container throughput rising 6.4 percent to 290 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). Growth was particularly strong in foreign trade containers throughput, which increased 8.9 percent in the January-October period. "In the first 10 months of this year, China's transportation economy maintained steady performance, with new growth drivers cultivated at an accelerated pace and development resilience demonstrated, highlighting an overall trend of stability and progress," said Cai Jianhua, a statistics official with the Ministry of Transport. In the same period, investment in transportation infrastructure also remained at a high level, with fixed-asset investment totaling 2.95 trillion yuan (about 417 billion U.S. dollars).
