Brit among 10 tourists arrested at 'illegal poker den' on Thai island
A British tourist was among 10 arrested in a raid on a gambling den in Thailand.
Elliott Jame Rosenfeld, 53, was detained at the secret poker hall where holidaymakers allegedly gambled for cash behind closed curtains on Koh Phangan island.
Police converged on the property called 'Golden Moon House' on Tuesday, where they found motorbikes parked outside the rented residence.
They recorded the suspected illicit activity inside through the curtain gaps before storming the underground casino at 10 pm local time.
Officers found the stunned tourists sitting around a table with cards, poker chips, and an automatic card shuffler.
The Brit, six Russians, as well as men from Romania, Israel, and Germany, were arrested.
Cops also seized 134,950 baht (3,184 GBP) in cash and 18 gambling devices during the raid.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Winit Boonchit of the Tourist Police said: 'The gambling was organised by Russian man Anton Kozko, 36, who rented the house for 30,000 baht per month.
'He admitted that he called and sent messages via applications to invite his foreign friends to play poker. They exchanged cash for casino chips to use during the game.'
The suspects were charged with engaging in illegal gambling (poker) for money, while Anton was additionally charged for hosting a gambling activity.
The suspects and seized items were handed over to Koh Phangan district station for further legal action, police said.
Most forms of gambling are illegal in Thailand under the country's Gambling Act of 1935.
Poker, and other games like slot machines and baccarat, fall under the law's 'List A' and are prohibited. Organisers of List A games may be punished with detention between three months and three years, and a fine of up to 5,000 baht 9118 GBP).
