Masked Lapwings (Vanellus miles miles) are also known a Spur-winged Plovers because of the conspicuous carpal spur on their wings. The spurs are used in attacks on predators or people that the Lapwing pair fear are threatening their eggs or chicks. Adult birds also have large yellow facial wattles that are larger in male birds. This pair of Masked Lapwings were feeding on the tidal flats adjacent to the Cairns Esplanade in Far North Queensland in northern Australia. They then moved to a small freshwater stream that flows across the tidal flat where they enjoyed bathing, wing-stretching and a bit of preening.
