6. SHROUDED BODY OF BABY BEING CARRIED FOR BURIAL GAZA, PALESTINE - JANUARY 13: A one-year-old baby died from hypothermia in Deir al-Balah on Tuesday, Jan. 13, as freezing winter conditions worsen the plight of displaced families living in makeshift shelters amid Israel’s blockade and restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip.
The baby, Muhammed Besyuni, was staying with his family in a tent after they were forced from their home by Israeli attacks.
The tent, described as poorly insulated and unfit for cold weather, offered little protection as temperatures dropped, and the baby died after exposure to the harsh conditions.
The death comes as residents and local observers report rising casualties linked to the spread of cold-related illnesses in overcrowded encampments, where many families lack blankets, heaters, dry clothing, or adequate shelter.
Displaced families across the Gaza Strip have spent months living in tents and makeshift shelters exposed to harsh winter weather, struggling to keep children warm amid fuel shortages and limited winter supplies.
The Israeli army has killed more than 71,000 people, most of them women and children, and injured over 171,000 others in its genocide since October 2023 that left the Gaza Strip in ruins.
Despite a ceasefire that began last Oct. 10, the Israeli army has continued its attacks, killing 424 Palestinians and wounding 1,189 others, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
